Young Scientist Program

In 2010, Turtle Cove received a $60,000 National Oceanic Atmospheric Association (NOAA) grant for Establishment of an Education Training Program for Young Scientists and Ecosystem Tours for Students and Community Leaders at Galva Canal Marsh and Manchac Swamp at Turtle Cove . The grant was provided under the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Restoration Act Program. Associated partners included the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) Education Program, University of New Orleans-Coastal Education and Research Facility (CERF), and the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Maritime Museum (LPBMM). The project served to totally remake and update Turtle Cove's historic field trip tours by providing a framework for advanced middle and high school students to obtain hands-on training in a variety of other wetland studies of their choosing, such as: water quality monitoring, sampling of vegetation/fishes/invertebrates, and establishment and monitoring of basic wetland experiments run by Southeastern faculty and graduate students. The program also provides funding for wetland field trip tours in canoes and on the Turtle Cove Pontoon Boat for various community groups and leaders.
