Teaching Remotely

To teach online or remotely, you must first complete the Teaching Online at Southeastern course.  This course is posted in Moodle and will lead you through the basic steps for developing and facilitating a course in the virtual environment.

Communicating clearly and often concerning the direction and expectations of your course is critical.  Students expect to hear from you on a regular basis and report higher rates of course satisfaction when that happens!

You can lecture and facilitate class discussions through our web based video conferencing tool, Google Meet.  This tool allows you to hold real-time conversations.  Other technologies, like YouTube, allow you to record your lecture and post for asynchronus viewing.  Make your class come alive by narrating your PowerPoints and hosting Discussion Forums!

Use specific, detailed directions for activities and lessons. Unlike a face- to-face course, you cannot assume that every student understands what you expect or how to accomplish it. 

• Write detailed directions that explain exactly what a student should do.
• Try to anticipate questions that might arise in a face to face setting.
• If the student must download/upload a file, explain exactly how to complete the steps to avoid any confusion or incorrect submissions.
• Outline the purpose of the assignment.
• Give sequential guidelines.
• Use strong action verbs.

Make materials accessible to all students.

• Text materials should be in a format that can utilize a screen reader if possible. 
• No image PDF’s but scan with OCR to detect text in document.
• Clear statement on the Moodle Course.
• Let students know that if any of the materials are not accessible, they should contact you immediately.

Clearly stated, measurable objectives for each activity help students understand the purpose of the activity and what they should know or be able to do after they complete it.

• Do NOT just add an activity and expect students to do it.
• Clearly state the learning objective for the lesson or activity.
• Ensure that the lesson or activity assessment aligns with the stated objective.
