     HAMMOND ‑‑ Winners of the annual Region VIII Social Studies Fair, hosted March 18 by Southeastern Louisiana University, have been announced.

Grand prize winners for individual and group projects were chosen in three divisions, Division I (grades 4‑6), Division II (grades 7‑8), and Division III (grades 9‑12). They will advance to the state Social Studies Fair at Louisiana State University.

DIVISION I

     INDIVIDUAL -- Grand Prize: Jamie Owens, Lake Harbor Middle School, “The Lord God Bird: ‘Ghost of the Big Woods’”; Runner-up: Nathan Arendall, Lake Harbor Middle School, “Confusion 101.”

     GROUP -- Grand Prize: Lauren St. Romain and Dani Schillace, Holy Ghost School, “Louisiana’s Jewelry Box”; Runner-up: Sarah Ellen Carrere and Hallie Braud, Cedarwood Elementary, “Hurricane Hunters: Aviators of the Storm.”

DIVISION II

     INDIVIDUAL -- Grand Prize: Delaney Sheehan, Cedarwood Elementary, “Darwin or Divine: Creationism versus Evolution”; Runner-up: Tyler Thompson, Madisonville Junior High School, “Brave Heart Face or Fiction.”
     GROUP -- Grand Prize: Kalie Beckers and Sarah Vales, Southeastern Lab School, “All About Eventing.”

DIVISION III

     INDIVIDUAL -- Grand Prize: Nicole Pierce, Ponchatoula High School, “La Cosa Nostra”; Runner-up: John Bayer, St. Paul School, “Lyudmila Pavlichenko: The Lady Sniper.”

     GROUP – Grand Prize: Adam Vanek and Cade Varnado, the St. Paul School, “Back to Nature: Neopaganism”; Runner-up: Sean Collins, Ryan Branson, Kirstie Jiles, Pearl River High School, “Child Soldiers in Uganda.”
